Overview

Hype:

This cave is one of the most decorated caves in Utah. Anchor your rope to a tree that is split in half. Rappel down about 25 feet into the entrance room. At the back of the room, there is a gate. Past the gate, it gets very tight, but it opens up after about 20 feet. You may want to take off your helmet at this point and push it ahead of yourself. As there are hundreds of delicate formations throughout the cave, please step lightly and watch your head. Formations include calcified roots, stalagtites, and helectites. The most decorated passage is off limits for recreational trips. Red Baron Cave is quite cool year round, so long sleeves are recommended.

Logistics

We met at the trailhead at 5:30 and started hiking around 6:00. We got to the cave around 8:00. We finished exploring the cave around 10:30 and got back to the cars around 11:45.

Story

After I shared the story of our trip to Red Baron Cave in sacrament meeting, Mason wanted to go too. He set up the trip and then found out that one of the permit requirements is to go with someone who has already been before. So that's how I ended up with an invitation. They guys were really fun and we all had a great time. I let them explore the cave and didn't give them any direction on where to go. We actually found a side passage that we hadn't explored before.

Story

I took a Scout group from Orem through Red Baron Cave. The hike up was quite difficult in the snow. The snow was about a foot deep for most of it, but when we had to cross the chute and climp up the other side, it was up to waist deep in some spots. A couple of the boys had a really hard time on the hike and really dragged their feet the whole way. The hike down was a little easier because we had gravity on our sides, but the thick layer of crusty snow on the top of the powdery snow really scratched up our shins.
