Overview

Hype:

The Château de Chenonceau is a French château spanning the River Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. It is one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire valley. The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556-1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge, built from 1570–1576 to designs by Jean Bullant.

Story

This castle was really cool. The bus dropped us off at the parking lot and we walked down a long, tree-lined driveway. The castle used to sit right at the edge of the river. But now, they built on top of the bridge, so the castle spans the river. We stuck with the guide for a bit, but they we split off and explored on our own. We went across the river and took some pictures from the shore. It was quite rainy. Then we walked through the gardens and the forest (where we found an awesome sign telling people not to pee in the woods). We saw the carriage display and then wandered through the hedge maze on the way back to the bus.
