Overview

Hype:

Below Little Hole, adventure takes another turn – here camping along the river is available at a multitude of float in river campsites. Besides one challenging rapid at Red Creek (which one may choose to portage), the river here is enjoyed more for its remote scenic beauty and world-class trout fishing. If you raft this section straight through you are looking at about a 5 hour float.

Story

Thursday, July 19

We got up early, ate breakfast, and left camp. We picked up 3 rafts from Green River Outfitters (Trout Creek Flies) in Dutch John. Then we drove to the spillway boat launch just below the Flaming Gorge dam. We started rafting at about 9:45 am. We floated Section A, stopping to cliff jump in a few places. The rapids were fun but not huge.

We ate lunch on the river. Then we continued down Section B. We stopped and swung on a rope swing and did some more cliff jumping. One of the boats tried to liven things up by trying to hit every rock on purpose. We pulled into Bridge Hollow Campground at about 5:30.

Friday, July 20

We originally planned to float Section C, but after the slow section on Section B, we decided we'd rather do section A again. On our way up, we stopped at the visitor center and took the dam tour. The elevator was broken, so we didn't get to go down inside the dam, but it was still informative and fun.

We launched at the spillway boat launch at around 11:00, and we arrived at Little Hole Recreation Area around 2:30. I wore a wetsuit so I could stand swimming in the cold water, but the flip side of that is that it was too hot to ride in the raft. So I floated the entire Section A with just a lifejacket and no raft, including all the rapids. It was a lot of fun, but I had some really sore muscles over the next few days because I held my feet up in front of me to feel for rocks.

We had a late lunch at Little Hole then Bishop and I drove home early, and the rest of the group went back to camp for one more night.
