Topaz Mountain is a great place to collect topaz. Single colorless crystals can be found in the washes around Topaz Mountain. Larger amber crystals can be found by breaking open the white rhyolite to find cavities.

The Vernon Hills wonderstone is a welded-vitric tuff of rhyolitic composition. It is a volcanic rock composed predominantly of volcanic glass particles which have been welded or stuck together by heat and compacted by the weight of overlying material. Alteration of the rock by circulating ground water produced the colorful banding. The maroon and yellow-brown colors are due to the presence of iron oxides.

Glitter Mountain is a selenite mine located just outside St. George, Utah. Many websites claim that the mine is abandoned. However, after our visit, we were told that the mining operation is still active and that the owners don't want people collecting selenite from their mine. It's still free to visit, but please respect the owner's wishes.

The Dugway Geode Beds are an excellent place to gather geodes. The easiest way to find geodes is to find an area of past excavation and start digging. In a day, each person can almost fill a 5-gallon bucket with geodes.
