Story

Friday, August 16 - I worked a half day from home. We finished packing for the ward campout. Becca came with us. When the kids got home from school, we loaded up in the truck and drove to Camp Haven near Fairview for our ward campout. We stopped and put some signs up on the way. We were the first ones there, so we got our tent and stuff set up and started getting camp chefs, yard games, and other group stuff set up. We arrived around 5:00, and other people started showing up around 5:30 or 6:00. We made a fire and cooked hot dogs then hung out and talked with friends until dark. A kid jumped on our brand new cornhole set and broke one of the side supports. I was pretty upset about that.

Saturday, August 17 - We woke up around 6:30 to loads of kids running around and yelling. Tara and I got our sleeping bags and pads put away. We asked our kids to do the same, but they didn't listen to us. We helped cook breakfast for everyone then got camp cleaned up a bit before we went to our activities. There was a little bit of a mix-up with which time slots had which activities on the sign up, so we had to do some last minute shuffling for people. Our family went to archery first, and we all really enjoyed that. Hannah brought her own bow and it was pretty interesting to see the difference between a small kid bow and a real bow. Next we went to zipline. That was also a lot of fun, and we saw a moose while we were there. It started to get a bit stormy, but it only rained for a second. Then we went down to do the giant swing. Madi and Savannah were in harnesses getting ready for their turn when the lightning started and they had to shut everything down. Then it started raining buckets. We ran up the hill as fast as we could back to camp so we could shelter in the pavilion. Luckily, the storm passed quickly, and the sun came back out. We dried off our camp chairs and tent and other gear and packed stuff up. We had lunch then went back down at 2:00 to do the high ropes course. We got in our gear and had our safety training then the lightning started again. Everyone, especially Savannah, was very bummed, but it was the right call. As we were taking our gear off, it started downpouring again and rained heavily for the next hour. We got camp cleaned up the rest of the way and drove home. The dirt roads were super slick mud. At the bottom of the hill, Tara got out to unlock the gate and got completely drenched in the process. She was soaking from head to toe.
