Overview

Hype:

Mystery Castle, situated in the foothills of South Mountain Park in Phoenix, Arizona, is a unique 18-room structure built between 1930 and 1945 by Boyce Luther Gulley for his daughter, Mary Lou. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Gulley relocated from Seattle to Phoenix, where he constructed the castle using found and inexpensive materials such as stone, adobe, automobile parts, and salvaged rail tracks. The castle features 13 fireplaces, a chapel, a cantina, and a dungeon. After Gulley's death in 1945, Mary Lou and her mother moved into the castle and began offering tours in 1948. The property was later maintained by the Mystery Castle Foundation. In March 2022, the castle suffered significant vandalism, leading to temporary closure for repairs. As of now, tours have been suspended. Mystery Castle has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
