Hype:
The landscape and architectural complex of Praça da Liberdade is a synthesis of the styles that mark the history of Belo Horizonte. Construction of the square began at the time of the founding of the new mining capital (1895 - 1897). Situated at the highest point of the initial area of the city the square was made to house the seat of mining power, the buildings of the Government Palace and the first Secretaries of State following the trend of the time - eclectic style with neoclassical elements. Over the years, the complex has received buildings of different architectural styles. In the 1940s, the stone dust-coated art-deco style of the Cristo Rei Palace. In the 1950s and 1960s, modern buildings were incorporated into the ensemble, such as the Niemeyer Building and the Public Library. In the 1980s, in a postmodern style, the building known as the "Queen of Junk" was inaugurated. The square also has a gazebo. The layout and gardens, inspired by the Versailles Palace, are an invitation to walk. The architectural and landscaping ensemble of Liberty Square was listed on June 2, 1977 by the IEPHA. The measure therefore contemplates the buildings of the civic center - Liberdade Palace and former Secretaries of State - and extends to the gardens, lakes, alleys, fountains and monuments of the square, as well as the facades of various buildings around it.

Jeremy Dye, others,
We walked around the square and took some pictures. I bought a couple of souvenir magnets.
