Overview

Hype:

A geological curiosity - rare in Utah - the "Woodpile" is a cluster of lava logs formed about 30 million years ago during the Eocene Period. The "logs" were formed when a lava flow cooled into orderly columnar joints having 3 to 5 sides. The columns measure about a foot in diameter and up to 15 feet in length. This formation was on the rim of the caldera that collapsed due to a void left when lava flowed out from under the caldera. Basin and range faulting caused the formation to tilt onto its side. Erosion has exposed the formation we now see.

Getting There

Navigate to 39.760414, -112.123373.

Coming from the north, there is a cattle fence across the road. After you go through, please close the fence behind you so that cattle can't get through.

Route

From the parking area, head northeast through the kissing gate. There is a sign at the trailhead that explains how Paul Bunyan's Woodpile was formed. Follow the well-traveled trail for 0.8 miles northeast to the woodpile. I recommend taking the switchbacks to the top of the woodpile and hiking down between the two wood stacks. Some of the rocks are loose, so be careful with your footing.

Story

Savannah and I visited Paul Bunyan's Woodpile for our Daddy-Daughter date. Because it was a pretty long drive to get there, we were worried about having enough daylight. Turns out the hike was quick, and we were just fine. It was pretty fun to see the woodpile and eplore around. The arch was a nice bonus as well.
