Story

Lair of Lunacy

I give this room 2 stars.

After dinner, we met up with Ondy and her kids at Escape Key to do the Lair of Lunacy room. Calliope was a bit scared by the dark and the intro video, so Ondy let her play on her phone. The room was quite simple, so we let the kids do most of the puzzles. We still ended up getting on the leaderboard for time, and the kids were super excited about that.

Pros

  • Intro video was great.
  • Game master was attentive and helpful.
  • Climate control was good.
  • Puzzles had clear entry and exit points.
  • Most props and puzzles were functioning and in good repair.

Cons

  • There weren't enough flashlights, but they let us use our cell phones, so that worked out.
  • Theming was quite minimal.
  • Room was a bit rundown. Piano had a broken key, paper clues were worn, and flashlights were dim.
  • There were way too many combination locks and key locks. There is a point where you solve a puzzle and open a combination lock, and the only thing inside the box is a key for another lock. C'mon!
  • There weren't any "real" puzzles. There were some observation items and searching and fill in the blanks, but no real puzzles.

Infiltrated Room

Our Getout Pass gave us free admission to one of the rooms at Escape Key. We did the Infiltrated room. I have to say that I was skeptical that it would be very good, based on their mini escape room game at FearCon and also because the employees at Getout Games recommended them (anyone that Getout Games recommends is automatically suspect because their room was so bad). We were not disappointed though. This proved to be a really fun experience. They had a number of really fun and unique puzzles, the theming was well done, and the game master was attentive and just the right amount of helpful. We had a great time.

Mini Escape Booth

Tara and I played the mini escape room at FearCon. It was a 5-minute game with one puzzle and one search item. We solved the puzzle right away but didn't find the search item and ended up not escaping. Their theming was lackluster and their puzzle looked like it was thrown together in a few minutes. Based on our experience at the mini escape room, we won't be bothering to go to their real escape room any time soon.
