Overview

Hype:

Winchester Escape House is an escape room in Payson, Utah. They have traditional escape rooms and also the Immersion Room, which uses projectors to project the different scenes on the walls. Unlike many of the lower quality escape rooms around, Winchester doesn't have a single padlock or combination lock. Instead, they use sensors and props that fit within and add to the storyline. Another awesome thing about Winchester that makes their games fun to play is that the puzzles are less about observationally connecting the dots and more about figuring out solutions within clearly defined rules.

Story

We left at 3:00 so we could buy some soda at the store (didn't think ahead or we could have got soda on Friday) for my TA team building activity at the escape room. They played Butch Cassidy Part 2 and had a great time. We had pizza and soda afterward.

Story

Luke and Tracy came up for the weekend, and we did several escape rooms with canyoneering friends. On Saturday, we did Butch Cassidy Part 1, Moroni's Quest, Butch Cassidy Part 2, and finally Pirate Cove. Different people popped in and out for the different games depending on availability, then we went to my parents' house for dinner and puzzles.

Butch Cassidy's Great Escape Part 1

Tara and Savannah and several of Savannah's friends did Butch Cassidy's Great Escape Part 1. They had a great time and the kids were able to help some with the puzzle even though the adults did most of the heavy lifting.

Pros

  1. The room decorating and theming was awesome.
  2. The props were very well done.
  3. The puzzles matched the story and didn't break immersion.
  4. There were some very unique and creative puzzles.
  5. The puzzles had clear objectives and constraints.
  6. Lighting was bright.
  7. Audio tracks contributed to experience.
  8. Game master was just the right amount of helpful.
  9. There were lots of fun physical elements.
  10. There were lots of hands-on objectives/tasks and not just brain puzzles.
  11. Not a single combination lock or padlock.
  12. Several gen-2 and gen-3 puzzles.
  13. Lots of "aha" moments where answer was clear before attempting to input the answer.
  14. Puzzles were identifiable.
  15. At any given time, there were usually multiple puzzles that people could be working on.
  16. Good variety of puzzle styles.

Cons

  1. Some of the controllers and programming were not complete yet, due to beta testing.
  2. Many of the puzzles were too difficult for children.
