Overview

Hype:

This short trail takes hikers to a spectacular alcove full of white, red, and yellow pictographs. The rock art was created by the Basketmaker people between 62 B.C. and A.D. 452, who used pigments such as rabbitbrush, ochre, and sumac to make their paintings. The access road is very narrow with continuous deep sand, so four-wheel drive is required.

Trail Condition: Class 2 (Trail may have tree roots or rocks jutting out. Navigation skills may consist of following rock cairns and choosing turns at junctions. Elevation gains may be more substantial.)

Park in the pullout at the end of the road.

Route

From the trailhead, start hiking east. The trail is very well maintained and easy to follow. The trail goes generally northeast before going down some switchbacks and passing a rounded rock spire. Continue east down the ridge. There is a chain link fence to keep people from falling off the edge of the cliff. Once you get down below the cliff band, the trail then loops around and heads west-northwest along the bottom of the cliff to where it ends at the pictograph panel and alchove.

Story

This was one of the favorite activities we did during our spring break trip to Kanab. The hike was a little bit too steep for Dad, so Dad and Mom both turned back when we reached the switchbacks. The pictographs were awesome, and the weather was perfect. All our cars got some serious Rocky Mountain pinstripes from the narrow road.
