Overview

Hype:

This is a beautiful limestone canyon with big travertine rappels. The entrance and exit are straightforward, with well-travelled paths. The canyon is accessed from La Barranca. It is quite vertical (i.e. it has a lot of rappels in quick succession, and several of them are 100+ feet). The PG rating is likely due to exposure at several of the rappel stations, including one where it is best to use care and ensure you are clipped into the next station before getting off rappel from the previous rappel station.

Story

Agua Fria canyon was quite a bit different than the other two canyons we did because the canyon was only flowing a trickle. The approach was through a rural countryside.

Napo didn't do the canyon with us because his knee was acting up. The canyon has a couple of 150-foot rappels. Most notable was the big rappel down a cone into a pool with two decaying pigs. It smelled horrible!

We had a great time. The exit hike was very steep and long, but there were stairs almost the whole way. My watch said I did 218 flights of stairs that day.
