Pack Drag

Description

The pack drag is a low capacity anchor used to slow a decent but not rappel from. It is used to convert an uncontrolled slide into a controlled slide.

  1. Place your pack behind a lip or in a pinch or even on the flat ground.
  2. Attach a length of webbing to your pack handle and throw the other end down.
  3. Slide down while holding the webbing and using it to slow yourself down.
  4. At the bottom of the drop, pull the rope with more weight to pull the pack down.

Advantages

The pack drag is fast and convenient.

Disadvantages

The pack drag takes some guesswork and experience to use properly. If you wedge the pack too tight, you might not be able to pull it down once you're at the bottom. If you don't wedge the pack enough, it might come lose and you could slide out of control.
