Lime, produced by heating limestone in specially constructed kilns, was essential for making mortar, whitewash, and for processing leather—materials crucial to construction, decoration, and industry in 19th-century Provo. The first lime in the area was burned by Joseph Mecham in 1851, and demand increased with the rise of adobe and brick construction. Several kilns appeared along the road between Provo and Springville, with The Ovens being built by Thomas Boardman around the turn of the century.
