Overview

Hype:

Montezuma Canyon has a significant amount of low stemming up to 15 feet above the ground. The canyon is incredibly scenic with swirling walls. It can hold a fair amount of water and mud depending on recent rains. The canyon has a very scenic natural bridge partway down. Natural anchor building skills are required. The exit hike has some class 4 scrambling up a crack with some exposure.

Story

It was super muddy when we went, so that added an extra level of difficulty. We also had a couple of people who were less comfortable with stemming and downclimbing. The canyon was amazingly pretty and we had a great time. My favorite part was when one person rappelled too far below the arch and ended up in a slime-covered pothole. After we got done hoising him out, he was covered in mud.
