Three-to-One Mechanical Advantage

Description

The easiest way to know that you have a  3-to-1 is if there is one strand of rope going to the object that needs a lot of force and 3 strands of rope going the opposite direction (2 to an anchor and 1 to the puller).

The figure to the right shows how to set up a 3-to-1 pulley system.

  1. Locate a strong bottom anchor.
  2. Use webbing to attach a Micro Traxion (ideal), pulley (good) or carabiner (acceptable) to the bottom anchor.
  3. Run the pull strand through the pulley.
  4. Attach an ascender or slide & grip knot the pull strand as high as you can reach.
  5. Attach a pulley or carabiner to the ascender.
  6. Run the end of pull strand through the pulley attached to the ascender.
  7. Pull like crazy!
