The double overhand knot is used to create a stopper knot in the end of a rope. The purpose of a stopper knot is to prevent a rappeller from rappelling off the end of the rope if the rope is too short. Stopper knots can also be used to back up other knots.
The double overhand knot is the easiest stopper knot to tie.
