Description
Almost everyone carries a pack on almost every canyoneering trip. There are a lot of specialized packs out there and a lot of opinions on which packs are the best. Here are a few things to consider when selecting a pack:
- Durability - Canyons are very hard on packs, and packs especially designed for canyons will probably last longer.
- Water Draining - If you're doing a canyon with a lot of water, it's nice to have a pack that drains water quickly.
- Size and Pockets - Some packs have convenienct pockets for helmets or have gear loops for attaching carabiners.
- Shape - Some packs have a sloped bottom which helps keep the bottom from dragging on the rock when you're downclimbing.
- Reinforced Attachments - Some packs have extra strong attachment points that you can attach a rope to when using the pack for a pack toss or pack drag.
- Cost - For some people, a cheap backpack from DI may be a better value than an expensive, canyon-specific pack.
