An etrier is a short webbing ladder commonly used in rick climbing aid climbing. You can purchase a sewn one or tie your own. The sewn ones are much nicer because the rungs stay open better.
In canyoneering, etriers are sometimes used to speed up pothole escape once one person escapes a pothole. The first person out clips the etrier to their pack and sits on their pack while the others climb the etrier.
