Johnson Canyon is a geological and recreational feature of Snow Canyon State Park in southwestern Utah, United States. The canyon is situated within a desert landscape marked by Navajo sandstone formations, basalt lava flows, and intermittent washes, reflecting the region’s complex geological history. The area supports desert plant species such as cottonwood and willow in sheltered sections, contributing to a contrast between arid terrain and localized greenery.
The canyon is accessible via a relatively short hiking trail commonly described as easy to moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for a wide range of visitors. One of its primary landmarks is Johnson Arch, a natural sandstone arch that serves as a focal point for hikers. The trail traverses varied terrain, including sandy paths and rocky sections shaped by both erosion and past volcanic activity.
Access to Johnson Canyon is subject to seasonal restrictions, typically from mid-March through mid-September, in order to protect sensitive wildlife habitats. During this period, entry may be limited to guided hikes authorized by park officials. The most favorable times to visit are generally in the cooler months, particularly from fall through early spring, when weather conditions are more suitable for outdoor activities in the region.

We packed up for the day and met at the Johnson Canyon trailhead for a ranger tour. The canyon is seasonally closed except for guided hikes. We learned about animals and the canyon. At the top, we could see the final rappel from a technical route Savannah and Madi had done years ago.
