Hype:
Pioneer Names Trail is one of Snow Canyon State Park’s easiest and most historically interesting short hikes. It leads to sandstone alcoves where early pioneers left names and dates, protected beneath the rock overhangs.
The hike is brief but scenic, following the base of tall red cliffs in classic Snow Canyon desert terrain. The park notes that the trail includes historical markers, rock climbing access, and some of the best shade found on any hike in the park.
Because Snow Canyon is in southern Utah’s desert climate, spring and fall are generally the most comfortable times to visit. Summer can be very hot, while winter is often still possible but cooler and less predictable.
Trail Condition: Class 2 (Trail may have tree roots or rocks jutting out. Navigation skills may consist of following rock cairns and choosing turns at junctions. Elevation gains may be more substantial.)
Time: 15 minutes

Tara and the kids hiked the Whiptail Trail from camp down to Pioneer Names. They hiked up to the names, then across to a small arch.
They got back on the Whiptail Trail and hiked down to the sand dunes. By that point, Cooper was too tired to continue and plopped face-down in the sand, refusing to go further.
After he calmed down, they hiked back up the Whiptail Trail to camp. They had a picnic in the grass under a tree.
