Overview

Hype:

Boltergeist Canyon is fun but short. It's definitely not a destination canyon, but it can be good for a travel day or in conjunction with Yankee Doodle Canyon down the road. Boltergeist is generally dry except for the last pool, making it appropriate for all seasons. Downclimbing instead of rappelling can increase the difficulty.

Getting There

Navigate to 37.250172, -113.430581.

Route

Approach

Walk 5 minutes to the head of the canyon.

Canyon

Head down canyon for about 5 minutes until you arrive at the first drop.

Drop #1: Short, easy downclimb.

Climb past a couple of potholes.

Drop #2: Rappel 35 ft from a 2-bolt anchor or downclimb on the left.

Drop #3: Rappel or chimney 45 ft down a vertical chute.

Drop #4: Slide down a low angle chute, then drop about 6 feet. There is a tree anchor at the top of the chute, which can be used for rappel (50 ft total).

Drop #5: Rappel 50 feet down a V crack from a chockstone anchor. You can rappel all the way down into a pond, or you can rappel part way down and bridge over the pond.

Exit

From the bottom of the canyon, head north up the cliff face. There are plenty of 3rd class hiking options, so if you find yourself at a difficult spot, look around for something easier. Once at the canyon rim, head southwest until you come to a dirt road. Follow the road south to the trailhead.

Story

After doing Boundary Canyon and Water Canyon, we did Boltergeist Canyon on our last day before driving home. It was quick and easy. I definitely want to try upclimbing the canyon next time. I think it would be almost as fast as the hike out.
