Description
So what's the best rope for canyoneering? Everyone you ask will have a different answer. Perhaps right now, the best rope for you is the one you already own (the joke is that the best rope is your friend's rope). If you like caving and already have thick static ropes, use those for canyoneering too. After you go canyoneering a few times, you'll find out what you like and don't like. If you're just getting into canyoneering, here is what I would recommend.
- First: 30m (100ft) by 8-10mm static rope. This will allow you to do rappels up to 90 feet when used with a pull cord. Since the tallest rappel in most canyons is less than 90 feet tall, this will be the only rope you'll need for most canyons.
- Second: 60m (200ft) by 8-10mm static rope. This will increase the number of canyons you can do.
- Third: 18m (60ft) by 8-10 mm static rope. You would use this rope for canyons that have only short rappels, or you could use it in conjunction with a longer rope so that you don't have to pull out your long rope for a short rappel.
I would suggest that each rope be a different color so you can easily grab the right one.
