Hype:

Lower Pine Creek Hike is a short hike to a beautiful and rarely seen waterfall in Zion National Park. Lower Pine Creek Falls is approximately 15 feet tall and drops into a sandy pond that is great for wading. Fifty yards downstream are a couple of ponds that are big enough to wade or possibly swim in. Pine Creek flows year-round and comes from a spring near the base of the Great Arch. Seasonal runoff can increase the flow dramatically. The trail to Lower Pine Creek Falls is not maintained or listed on any of the park maps, which means that this trail is not usually crowded.

Trail Condition: Class 2 (Trail may have tree roots or rocks jutting out. Navigation skills may consist of following rock cairns and choosing turns at junctions. Elevation gains may be more substantial.)

Getting There

The trailhead for Lower Pine Creek Hike is the first (bottom) switchback to the west of the big tunnel. Park on the shoulder of the road.

Route

Follow the social trails to the east. You'll have to cross Pine Creek a couple of times. Most people will be able to jump from rock to rock and keep their feet dry, but if you're not in good physical condition, I would recommend that you wear sandals and just walk up the creek. Keep an eye out for tadpoles and other critters in the stream and several small waterfalls along the way.

I went down to Zion a day early for our Hidden Canyon canyoneering trip. I did this hike because I hadn't ever done it before and it wasn't too crazy to do solo.
