Hype:
Polihale State Park is a remote wild beach on the western side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It is the most western publicly accessible area in Hawaii, although the privately owned island of Niihau is further west. The park is miles away from the town of Kekaha, and it can only be reached via a poorly marked, dirt sugarcane road, making a four-wheel drive vehicle preferable. The beach is several miles long, yet only the area known as "Queen's Pond" offers safe swimming.Time:

Tara and I camped at Polihale State Park for two nights. The first night was our first night in Hawaii. After a long day of travel including a huge delay at the airport, we finally got to camp and climbed in bed around 5:00 a.m. Utah time. Tuesday morning, we got up, fixed breakfast, and walked the beach a bit. Then we went up to Waimea and Kokee State Parks for the day. When we got back to camp, we strolled the beach for about 2 hours. We helped free a truck that was stuck in the sand. By the time we walked the beach back to camp, it was quite dark. We missed the turn to our camp and kept walking down the beach too far. Eventually we walked up to the road and followed the road for a bit until we got our bearings. Then we backtracked back to our camp. The beach was nice, super soft sand, but the temperatures were too hot for camping comfortably.
