Hype:
Located on the Hamakua Coast, Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is "The Valley of the Kings" an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive. The road into the valley is extremely steep and requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle so driving isn't recommended.Time:

We walked out to the Waipio Valley Lookout and read the interpretive signs, then we walked down the 4x4 road a ways to a small stream. I've seen roads that are 4x4 only, but they usually aren't paved. I also thought it was interesting that everyone is required to lock their hubs before starting down the road. We didn't go down into the Waipio Valley, but it must be a steep road!
