We stopped by the visitor center and asked for recommended activities. They recommended that we hike down to the heiau and then past the two fishponds. However, it was super hot, so we opted to skip the fishpond trail. We took the Ala Mauka-Makai Trail down to the junction, stopping at the petroglyph loop along the way. The petroglyphs were hard to make out and not as well preserved as some of the other locations on the island. From the trail junction, we took the Ala Kahakai Trail south to Honokohau Beach, the Heiau, and the Aiopio Fishtrap. We learned a bit about fishing by reading the interpretive signs, then we hiked back up to the car.
