Hype:

The Awaawapuhi Trail will take you on an ultimate journey as you descend from 4,070 feet elevation in the Kokee State Park to the valley rim of Nualolo and Awa’awapuhi valleys at 2,500 feet. The trail will lead you through rain forest, high desert like terrain and to some of the most awe inspiring vistas on Kauai’s Napali Coast. Awa’awapuhi Trail is a continual downhill hike from the trail head to the overlooks. Beyond the overlook is a knife-edge ridge with dizzying views of Awa'awapuhi Valley on one side and Nu'alolo Valley on the other.

Trail Condition: Class 2 (Trail may have tree roots or rocks jutting out. Navigation skills may consist of following rock cairns and choosing turns at junctions. Elevation gains may be more substantial.)

Time: 1.5-2 hours one way

Length: 3.1 miles one way

Elevation Gain: 332 ft., -2181 ft.

Story

We hiked the big loop counter-clockwise. We hiked the Awa'awapuhi Trail first, then the Nualolo Cliff Trail, and finally the Nualolo Trail. We started hiking at 8:30 a.m. and finished a few minutes before 3:00 p.m. We had rain in the morning, so all the plants were wet, but enjoyed the trails a lot. The views at the end were especially breathtaking. The Awaawapuhi Trail was probably our favorite hike of our trip.
