Overview

Hype:

This dispersed campground is located near the start of the Duchesne Tunnel, which is a 6-mile-long tunnel that conveys water from the Duchesne River to the Provo River. The road to the campground is extremely rocky and is only accessible to high clearance vehicles, so even though it's only 5 miles from the highway, plan on a 20-30 minute drive. Four wheel drive is required in several spots, especially if the road is wet. Subaru-type vehicles likely will not make it. The campground has half a dozen camp sites with stone fire rings. The camp sites are not very flat or smooth and are very rocky, but the views are amazing. East Portal Dispersed Campground is located immediately adjacent to the High Uintas Wilderness. Because of the high elevation (8,200 ft), this campground is much colder than the Wasatch Front, which makes it ideal to visit in summer. A short walk from East Portal Dispersed Campground is Little Deer Creek Falls. The trailhead for the Duchesne River Trail also begins at the campground and provides access to Cataract Gorge.

Story

We all met up in Heber and drove to our camping spot together. We drove two vehicles because Tara had to leave early so she could work on Saturday. The road down to our campsite was very rocky and high clearance so we had to leave the car close to the top of the dirt road. Our campsite was beautiful right next to a pond and an amazing waterfall. We had a lot of fun hiking to the falls and enjoying the scenery. Tara drove home after dinner. It was about 5 hours of driving and 5 hours of packing for her for about 5 hours of camping. We played headbands around the campfire.
