Hype:
Alexanderplatz has long been one of Berlin’s most important gathering places, evolving from a medieval marketplace into a symbolic center of East Berlin during the Cold War. Its wide open spaces and monumental architecture reflect postwar urban planning, while nearby streets connect to historic districts like Mitte. The square has witnessed political demonstrations, cultural change, and rapid redevelopment, making it closely tied to Berlin’s identity.
Today, Alexanderplatz functions primarily as a transportation crossroads, with S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, and buses converging beneath and around the square. It is a practical base for exploring Berlin, offering easy access to museums, government buildings, and neighborhoods across the city. Shops, fast food, and department stores dominate the immediate area, giving it a busy and sometimes chaotic atmosphere.
For visitors, Alexanderplatz is less about charm and more about orientation and convenience. Attractions like the TV Tower’s observation deck provide panoramic views, while the World Clock serves as a popular meeting point. Although not considered the most picturesque part of Berlin, it is an essential stop for understanding the city’s scale, history, and daily rhythm.

After the video game museum, we took the subway back to our hotel, stopping at Alexanderplatz on the way. We looked at the fountain and took some pictures of the adjacent architecture then caught our subway back to the hotel.
