Hype:
The Berlin Wall was built to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Berlin, which had become a major escape route from the communist-controlled East to the democratic West. Stretching roughly 155 kilometers, it included walls, fences, watchtowers, and a heavily guarded “death strip,” making it one of the most formidable borders in the world.
Throughout its existence, the Wall became a powerful symbol of the Cold War and the repression associated with the East German state. Despite the danger, thousands attempted to escape, with many succeeding and others losing their lives, which intensified international criticism and emotional responses worldwide.
The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, resulted from political pressure, mass protests, and a breakdown in East German authority. Its collapse paved the way for German reunification in 1990 and marked a significant turning point toward the end of the Cold War in Europe.

Next, we visited the Topography of Terror, an open-air and indoor documentation center on the site of former Nazi institutions. Its timelines and exhibits about how the Nazis rose to power are dense and sobering; we skimmed some sections to keep moving but could have stayed much longer.
Our last stop was a quick picture at Checkpoint Charlie, which is the best known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War.
