Hype:

Charlottenburg Palace Gardens occupy dozens of hectares of verdant Baroque-inspired grounds behind Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin’s largest historic palace and former royal residence. Originally designed in strict French Baroque style by Siméon Godeau, influenced by the gardens at Versailles, the layout was later softened with more naturalistic English landscape elements while retaining geometric flower beds, avenues, and ornamental features. 

Visitors can wander through expansive lawns perfect for picnics, explore intimate tree-lined walkways, enjoy views across the carp pond or along the Spree, and discover architectural highlights such as the Belvedere pavilion and Queen Luise’s mausoleum scattered throughout the grounds. The gardens are open daily all year round from early morning until dusk and are popular with both locals and tourists seeking a peaceful green escape within the city. 

While the garden itself is free to access, the Charlottenburg Palace interior and some garden buildings (including museum spaces, pavilions, and special exhibitions) require a separate entrance fee. Exploring the palace interiors, from lavish baroque halls to Rococo state rooms, is a complementary experience for history and art lovers.

Story

We changed into street clothes in the church bathroom and took a bus to Charlottenburg Palace. The palace was heavily bombed in World War II and reconstructed; the old and the new wings are both on show. We ate lunch on the benches outside, toured the old palace and the new palace sections, walked the gardens, and visited the mausoleum. 

We missed the pavilion tour by a couple of minutes, so Savannah and I took the next available guided tour while the others relaxed on the grass. We played cards while waiting.
