Hype:
The Brandenburg Gate was commissioned in the late 18th century by Prussian King Frederick William II and designed by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans as a triumphal arch representing peace. Over time, it became a powerful political symbol, witnessing imperial parades, Nazi propaganda, wartime destruction, and the division of Berlin during the Cold War.
During the period when the Berlin Wall stood, the gate was inaccessible and located in the heavily guarded border zone between East and West Berlin, turning it into a global emblem of separation. Its reopening in 1989 after the fall of the Wall marked a defining moment in modern European history and cemented its status as a symbol of freedom and unity.
Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a central gathering place for visitors and locals alike, surrounded by major attractions such as the Reichstag and Tiergarten. It serves as a backdrop for national celebrations, cultural events, and everyday tourism, representing Berlin’s resilience and evolving identity.

Our first stop was Brandenburg Gate, the city’s iconic monument.
Cooper was very tired and just sat on the park bench rather than walking around. We went through the gate then headed south.
