Hype:
Højerup Old Church was built in the 13th century as a Romanesque limestone church serving the local parish. Over centuries, constant erosion of the chalk cliffs beneath it gradually destabilized the structure, forcing the church to be deconsecrated and closed in the early 20th century. The most dramatic moment in its history occurred when the choir and part of the cemetery fell into the Baltic Sea, leaving the remaining nave standing at the cliff’s edge.
Today, the church is preserved as a historical monument and viewing platform, offering striking views of the sea and the Stevns Klint coastline. Visitors can walk inside the remaining structure, see traces of medieval frescoes, and experience firsthand the power of natural forces that shaped its fate. The site is also valued for its connection to the unique geology of the cliffs, which record the extinction event that ended the age of the dinosaurs.
Højerup Old Church is both a cultural landmark and a scenic destination, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, geology, and nature. Its accessibility from Copenhagen makes it a popular day trip, and the surrounding clifftop paths add to the experience. Weather and wind conditions play a major role in visitor comfort, making seasonal timing important.

After the museum, we continued along the coastline north and stopped at an old church constructed at the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean.
At some point in the past, part of the cliff collapsed, and part of the church fell into the ocean.
We took a giant staircase down to the beach and walked along the base of the cliffs.
It was fun to pick up the chalk because the rock was just like chalk you buy in the store. We also saw a fun ferret or something.
