Overview

Hype:

Skagen Gray Lighthouse, or Det Grå Fyr, was constructed in 1858 to improve maritime safety in the dangerous waters off Denmark’s northernmost point. Designed by Niels Sigfred Nebelong, it replaced the older White Lighthouse and became a crucial aid for ships navigating the meeting of two seas. Its tall, gray brick structure remains an iconic part of the Skagen landscape.

Beyond its navigational role, the lighthouse has become an important cultural and natural site. Visitors can climb to the top for expansive views of Skagen, Grenen, and the surrounding coastline. The former lighthouse keeper’s buildings now host exhibitions focused on nature, maritime history, and art, making the site appealing beyond its historical function.

The area around Skagen Gray Lighthouse is also internationally known for bird migration, as millions of birds pass through each year. This has led to the establishment of bird observatories and research activities at the site. Combined with coastal scenery, walking paths, and seasonal events, the lighthouse offers a blend of history, nature, and outdoor experience.

Story

Wednesday, July 23 – I was originally planning to work on Wednesday, but since I worked a long day on Tuesday and got caught up on what I needed, I ended up taking Wednesday off.

We drove up north to Skagen, the northern tip of Denmark. We parked by a lighthouse and walked around the outside.

Then we walked along the beach for about a mile up to the very tip-top.

It was awesome because where the two seas came together, the waves came in from both directions and met in the middle with a big splash.

We didn’t have our swimsuits on, so we didn’t go out very deep, but it was a lot of fun. There were a ton of people there.

On the walk back, we passed a couple bunkers and looked at them from the outside.

We had lunch on some picnic tables by the lighthouse. Kenneth cooked some hot dogs for us, and we had the classic Danish-style hot dogs with mustard sauce, some other sauce that we have no idea what it was, fried onions, and pickles on top.

They were really good. We ate 30 hot dogs between everybody.

We bought some magnets at the gift shop, then we put on our swimsuits and swam in the ocean. We really liked all the rocks that were tumbled smooth in the ocean. When they were wet, they were very colorful. Savannah made a whole rainbow with different colors of rocks. She also made a woven kelp mat.

The ocean was cold but tolerable.
