Hype:
Kastellet is one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe and was originally built in the 1600s as part of Copenhagen’s defensive system. Its distinctive pentagonal shape, earthen ramparts, bastions, and surrounding moat reflect classic military engineering of the era. Today, the site remains an active military area while also functioning as a public park.
Visitors can walk along the ramparts for views of the city, the Little Mermaid statue nearby, and the harbor. Inside the fortress are historic buildings, including barracks, a church, and a traditional Dutch-style windmill that is still maintained. The area is popular with locals for jogging, walking, and quiet recreation.
Kastellet offers a peaceful contrast to the busier parts of Copenhagen and is easily accessible by foot or bicycle. Its combination of history, nature, and open space makes it appealing to both tourists and residents, especially for those interested in architecture, military history, or relaxed outdoor experiences.

Sunday, August 3 – We took the Metro down to the Kastellet.
The Kastellet is a star-shaped fortress from the 17th century. There are ramparts around the outside and a moat.
Inside is a church and a bunch of military buildings.
Because it was Sunday, the church was in service and the museum was closed, so we just walked around the outside.
It was pretty rainy, but luckily we had umbrellas.
