Hype:

The Holstentor Museum occupies one of Germany’s most recognizable medieval structures, originally built as part of Lübeck’s fortifications to protect the city from western approaches. Its twin round towers and thick brick walls reflect the military architecture of the late Middle Ages and have become an enduring emblem of Lübeck.

Inside the museum, exhibitions focus on Lübeck’s rise as a leading Hanseatic city, highlighting maritime trade, economic networks, law, and daily life from the medieval period onward. Displays include ship models, weapons, trade goods, historical documents, and interpretive exhibits explaining how commerce shaped the city’s wealth and influence.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Holstentor Museum also serves as a gateway into Lübeck’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, making it both a cultural landmark and a starting point for exploring nearby churches, streets, and historic buildings that reflect the city’s long mercantile history.

Story

Around 10:00, we caught a bus to the city center. Our first stop was the Museum Holstentor, which is a medieval gate with two towers and walkways between them. 

The inside has some fun museum items about the history of Lübeck. The city was a big merchant hub.

We especially liked the model boats that were built in the 1600s.
