Hype:

Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace complex in Berlin and a major symbol of Prussian royal history. The New Wing was added in the mid-1700s to complement the older Baroque palace and reflect the power and refinement of Frederick the Great’s reign.

Inside the New Wing, visitors encounter richly decorated rooms, including famous spaces such as the Golden Gallery and the White Hall. These interiors feature ornate stucco work, gilded details, fine furniture, and artworks that highlight Rococo elegance and royal ceremony.

Although heavily damaged during World War II, the New Wing has been carefully restored and is now open to the public as part of the Charlottenburg Palace museum complex. It is typically visited alongside the Old Palace and the surrounding gardens, making it a key cultural attraction in Berlin.

Story

We changed into street clothes in the church bathroom and took a bus to Charlottenburg Palace. The palace was heavily bombed in World War II and reconstructed; the old and the new wings are both on show. We ate lunch on the benches outside, toured the old palace and the new palace sections, walked the gardens, and visited the mausoleum. 

We missed the pavilion tour by a couple of minutes, so Savannah and I took the next available guided tour while the others relaxed on the grass. We played cards while waiting.
