Hype:
The stretch of the Gudena River from Tange to Langaa is known for its gentle current and varied landscapes, making it one of the most popular canoeing routes in Denmark. Paddlers typically start near Tange Lake and move downstream through calm waters framed by reeds, meadows, and wooded banks. The route is well managed, with clear rules designed to protect nature and ensure a peaceful experience for everyone on the river.
Along the way, canoeists can enjoy frequent rest stops and shelters, making the trip suitable for both day outings and multi-day excursions. Birdlife is abundant, and it is common to see herons, ducks, and other river-dwelling species. The river’s slow pace allows plenty of time to take in the surroundings, fish from the banks, or stop for a picnic in designated areas.
The journey ends in Langaa, a small town with good access to transport and services, making it a convenient finishing point. Canoe rentals, permits, and overnight spots are well organized in this region, reflecting the Gudena River’s status as a classic Danish outdoor experience that combines relaxation, nature, and simple adventure.

Sunday, July 20 – We did a quick packing up, which was easy for us because everything was in suitcases already. Then we drove up to the small town of Tange. Kenneth and I shuttled a vehicle to Bjerringbro, the next town over, where there was a railroad stop, and we all hopped in canoes and started our trek down the Gudena River.
We started off with Madi and Laura in one canoe, Savannah and Marie in one canoe, Tara and Tenna in one canoe, and Kenneth and me with Cooper and August in the last canoe. We paddled that way for a couple of hours. There were some frustrations as people were trying to figure out how to steer. Marie ended up in tears at one point, and Savannah was also pretty flustered because Marie didn’t want to speak English.
We had some snacks, then rearranged people in canoes to facilitate communication and split up the adults for better steering. The canoe trip ended up being quite a bit longer than we anticipated because there was a headwind that slowed us down a lot. We were pushed pretty hard and stopped for lunch at the halfway point. There were some fun picnic tables, and it was really nice.
August found a fishing lure and was pretending to fish with it. As he was running around, it swung and stuck in his leg.
He started screaming. We ran over to see what was the matter and saw the hook embedded in his upper leg. We didn’t have anything to pull it out with, so we ran around to see if anybody had tools. I asked some fishermen, but they didn’t have anything good. Kenneth and Marie ended up running to the closest house, which was a quarter mile away. They brought back a pair of needle-nose pliers and a pair of dikes.
Kenneth pushed the hook back through the surface, then cut the barb off and pulled it back out. It was pretty traumatizing for August, but once the hook was out, he said it didn’t hurt at all.
We gave him a Band-Aid, then packed up our canoes and paddled to our takeout point. We were supposed to have the canoes returned by 4:00, but we were about 45 minutes late by the time we got there.
Tara especially had a hard time because the front of her canoe was so light that anytime the wind blew, it forced her canoe to turn sideways.
Kenneth and I walked up to the nearest train stop, then caught a train to the city where our cars were parked. Then we drove to pick up the first shuttle vehicle, then back to the takeout point to pick up everyone else.
