Hype:
The Imperial Palace of Goslar was constructed primarily during the reign of Emperor Henry III in the mid-11th century and served as a central location for imperial rule, administration, and assemblies of the Holy Roman Empire. Its strategic importance was closely tied to the nearby Rammelsberg mines, which provided immense wealth and resources to the empire. For over two centuries, emperors used the palace as a residence and a venue for imperial diets, shaping medieval German and European politics.
Architecturally, the palace is a prime example of Romanesque secular construction, featuring massive stone walls, grand halls, and a commanding presence at the edge of Goslar’s old town. Notable interior spaces include the Imperial Hall, later adorned with 19th-century historical murals, and the Chapel of St. Ulrich, which contains the heart of Emperor Henry III. Although restored and altered over time, the complex retains its medieval character and scale.
Today, the Imperial Palace functions as a museum and cultural landmark and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Old Town of Goslar and the Rammelsberg mines. Visitors can explore exhibitions on medieval imperial power, architecture, and history, making the palace a key destination for understanding the political and cultural development of medieval Germany.

Sunday, June 29 – We checked out of our VRBO and drove to Goslar, a historic town that was once an imperial seat of the Holy Roman Empire.
Our first stop was the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz), where we used audio guides to tour the lower-level artifacts.
We skimmed the Great Hall’s art section for time’s sake.
