Hype:
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was originally constructed in the late 19th century to honor Emperor Wilhelm I and was once one of Berlin’s most prominent religious landmarks. During World War II, the church was heavily damaged by Allied bombing, leaving much of the original building in ruins. Rather than demolish the remains, the decision was made to preserve the shattered spire as a memorial to the destruction caused by war.
In the 1950s and 1960s, a new church complex was built next to the ruins, designed by architect Egon Eiermann. This modern addition features a distinctive octagonal nave and bell tower, known for their blue stained-glass windows that create a solemn and contemplative atmosphere inside. The contrast between the ruined old church and the modern structures emphasizes themes of loss, renewal, and peace.
Today, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church serves both as an active place of worship and as a major cultural and historical attraction in Berlin. Located on Breitscheidplatz near Kurfürstendamm, it is a focal point for visitors interested in history, architecture, and reflection, and it remains one of the city’s most recognizable and meaningful landmarks.

We also walked past the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a badly damaged church left partly ruined as a war memorial, and took some pictures from the outside but didn't go in.
