Hype:
Stevns Klint is best known for its visible boundary layer between the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods, where a thin band of fish clay rich in iridium provides key evidence of the asteroid impact linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This geological feature has made the cliffs a destination for scientists, students, and visitors interested in Earth’s history, evolution, and climate change.
Beyond its scientific significance, the area offers impressive natural scenery with steep chalk cliffs, turquoise waters, and walking paths along the coast that provide panoramic views of the Baltic Sea. Visitors can explore the Stevns Klint Experience visitor center, walk down to the pebble beach below the cliffs, or enjoy birdwatching and fossil hunting in designated areas.
Culturally, Stevns Klint reflects centuries of human interaction with the landscape, from Højerup Old Church, partially collapsed due to cliff erosion, to Cold War–era bunkers hidden in the chalk. Small nearby towns and rural surroundings make it a calm destination, ideal for combining outdoor activities with history, geology, and Danish coastal life.

Thursday, August 7 - Our last tourist day in Europe. We drove south for about an hour to the eastern coast of Denmark. We went to the Cold War Museum Stevnsfort. Their next available tour through the tunnels in English was at 1:30, so we had about an hour and a half to walk around the surface displays. They had a bunch of military equipment on display. That was our first time inside a tank.
We really liked the large machine guns that took two people to operate—one person turned left and right while the other went up and down.
We had lunch on a picnic table and then joined a guided tour through the underground bunkers. Our tour guide was a former military engineer who had worked on the base before it was closed, so it was fun to get his perspective.
We went through almost a mile of underground tunnels to different rooms.
Then we came out of a tunnel to the bottom of the cliffs into the ocean.
The chalk dissolves quickly, leaving flint layers behind, so the beach was made up entirely of uniformly sized round balls of flint.

After the museum, we continued along the coastline north and stopped at an old church constructed at the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean.
At some point in the past, part of the cliff collapsed, and part of the church fell into the ocean.
We took a giant staircase down to the beach and walked along the base of the cliffs.
It was fun to pick up the chalk because the rock was just like chalk you buy in the store. We also saw a fun ferret or something.

Our next stop was at a lighthouse. We didn’t want to pay for parking or go up the lighthouse, so we just took pictures from the outside.
