The Mausoleum Charlottenburg stands within the landscaped park of Charlottenburg Palace and serves as a quiet, solemn landmark tied closely to Prussia’s royal past. Commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III after the death of his wife Queen Luise in 1810, it reflects both personal grief and the era’s neoclassical architectural ideals.
Inside, the mausoleum contains several significant tombs of the Hohenzollern dynasty, including those of Queen Luise, King Friedrich Wilhelm III, Emperor Wilhelm I, and Empress Augusta. The sculptural centerpiece is Queen Luise’s marble sarcophagus, celebrated for its realism and emotional depth, making it one of the most admired funerary sculptures in Germany.
Today, the mausoleum is a cultural and historical attraction, typically open to visitors during the warmer months. Its tranquil setting, artistic significance, and connection to Prussian and German history make it a meaningful stop for visitors interested in architecture, monarchy, and memorial art.

By Jeremy Dye
Jeremy Dye, Tara Dye, Savannah Dye, Madilyn Dye, Cooper Dye,
We changed into street clothes in the church bathroom and took a bus to Charlottenburg Palace. The palace was heavily bombed in World War II and reconstructed; the old and the new wings are both on show. We ate lunch on the benches outside, toured the old palace and the new palace sections, walked the gardens, and visited the mausoleum.
We missed the pavilion tour by a couple of minutes, so Savannah and I took the next available guided tour while the others relaxed on the grass. We played cards while waiting.
