Hype:

The Great Belt Bridge is one of Denmark’s most important infrastructure projects, completed in the late 1990s to replace ferry crossings between Zealand and Funen. It significantly reduced travel time across the country and strengthened economic, social, and logistical ties between eastern and western Denmark. The fixed link consists of multiple structures rather than a single bridge.

The road traffic uses the East Bridge, a long suspension bridge connecting Zealand to the small island of Sprogø, while the West Bridge is a box girder bridge linking Sprogø to Funen. Rail traffic runs through a separate tunnel beneath the strait between Zealand and Sprogø, making the system resilient and efficient for different transport needs. At its opening, the East Bridge was among the longest suspension bridges in the world.

Beyond its functional importance, the Great Belt Bridge is also an engineering landmark and a visual icon of modern Denmark. It is often admired for its scale and elegance, especially in clear weather, and has become a symbol of technological achievement, national unity, and the country’s ability to overcome geographic challenges.

Story

Thursday, July 17 – I took Thursday and Friday off work. We packed everything in the car and headed off to western Denmark to meet up with the Lausdahls and do some sightseeing in that portion of the country. We crossed several very long bridges on the way, which was fun.
