Overview

Hype:
The Bunkers at Skagen were constructed by German occupying forces during World War II to defend Denmark’s strategically important northern coastline. Built of thick reinforced concrete, these structures once housed soldiers, equipment, and radar or medical facilities, forming part of a much larger defensive system stretching along Europe’s Atlantic coast. Their placement near Grenen reflects the military significance of controlling sea routes where two bodies of water meet.
After the war, the bunkers were abandoned and gradually absorbed into the surrounding landscape. Wind and sand buried many of them, while coastal erosion caused others to tilt, crack, or slide toward the sea, giving them a dramatic and sometimes surreal appearance. This interaction between rigid wartime architecture and constantly changing nature has become one of their defining characteristics.
Today, the bunkers are valued mainly for their historical and cultural significance. Some are accessible to visitors, including the Skagen Bunker Museum, which offers insight into wartime life and the broader history of occupation in Denmark. Together, the bunkers serve as a reminder of conflict, resilience, and the passage of time in a place otherwise known for natural beauty and art.

Story
Wednesday, July 23 – I was originally planning to work on Wednesday, but since I worked a long day on Tuesday and got caught up on what I needed, I ended up taking Wednesday off.
We drove up north to Skagen, the northern tip of Denmark. We parked by a lighthouse and walked around the outside.
Then we walked along the beach for about a mile up to the very tip-top.
It was awesome because where the two seas came together, the waves came in from both directions and met in the middle with a big splash.
We didn’t have our swimsuits on, so we didn’t go out very deep, but it was a lot of fun. There were a ton of people there.
On the walk back, we passed a couple bunkers and looked at them from the outside.
We had lunch on some picnic tables by the lighthouse. Kenneth cooked some hot dogs for us, and we had the classic Danish-style hot dogs with mustard sauce, some other sauce that we have no idea what it was, fried onions, and pickles on top.
They were really good. We ate 30 hot dogs between everybody.
We bought some magnets at the gift shop, then we put on our swimsuits and swam in the ocean. We really liked all the rocks that were tumbled smooth in the ocean. When they were wet, they were very colorful. Savannah made a whole rainbow with different colors of rocks. She also made a woven kelp mat.
The ocean was cold but tolerable.
