Hype:
The Round Tower was constructed between 1637 and 1642 to function primarily as an astronomical observatory for the University of Copenhagen, reflecting Denmark’s strong interest in science during the reign of King Christian IV. Its design is unusual, featuring a wide spiral ramp instead of stairs, which was originally intended to allow horses to carry books and equipment to the top.
Inside the tower, visitors can explore the Library Hall, which once housed the university library and now hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events. The structure also includes a small observatory that remains in use for public stargazing on select evenings, maintaining its original scientific purpose.
At the top of the tower is an outdoor observation platform approximately 35 meters above street level, providing sweeping views of Copenhagen’s historic rooftops and landmarks. Due to its central location, architectural uniqueness, and historical importance, the Round Tower is one of the city’s most visited and enduring landmarks.

Since we were in the area with nothing on the agenda, we wandered down an adjacent walking street that had lots of shops and touristy things. We bought some churros with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. It was on the expensive side and very messy, but also very good.
It wasn’t on our list of things to do that day, but since we were close, we walked over to the Round Tower and got tickets to go up to the top.
The whole tower is a giant spiral ramp. Along the way, there were little stories about animals and children’s tales in each of the windows, and Cooper enjoyed putting stickers on his tower page for each window.
At the top, we walked around the outside and got some good views of the city—or at least all the roofs and spires.
