Hype:
The Disgusting Food Museum is located in central Malmö and showcases foods that provoke strong reactions, such as fermented fish, insect-based snacks, pungent cheeses, and unconventional delicacies from various cultures. The museum presents these items with scientific, cultural, and historical context rather than shock value alone.
A key feature of the museum is its interactive nature, allowing visitors to smell and, in some cases, taste selected foods while learning why they are appreciated in their countries of origin. This approach encourages cultural understanding and highlights how food preferences are shaped by environment, tradition, and upbringing.
The museum is typically visited year-round and appeals to curious travelers, food enthusiasts, and anyone interested in cultural experiences that go beyond traditional sightseeing. It is a compact but memorable stop that fits well into a short visit to Malmö’s city center.

Jeremy Dye, Tara Dye, Savannah Dye, Madilyn Dye, Cooper Dye,
We ate some snacks outside the Disgusting Food Museum before going in. They closed at 7:00, so we didn’t have time to eat a full dinner beforehand. That was probably a good thing because the museum had a lot of disgusting stuff in it that might not have sat well if we had just eaten.
They had different tubs where you could smell cheeses and fishes, along with a whole bunch of stories about each food. We were amused by some of the foods that other cultures find disgusting but that we enjoy, for example Jell-O salad, Twinkies, Pop-Tarts, and root beer.
At the end they had a bunch of foods for you to try. If you tried all of them, you could spin the wheel and get a prize. The kids weren’t very keen on trying the foods, but Tara and I gave a valiant effort. I tried all the foods except for the five spicy ones at the end, and Tara tried everything.
Notable disgusting foods included crickets, ants, stink bugs, mealworms, blue cheese, pickled herring, shark, century eggs, and sauerkraut juice.
We finished the Disgusting Food Museum right as they were closing at 7:00. We meandered down the shopping district, bought a magnet for Malmö, then tried to find a place for dinner.
