Hype:

The Bunkers at Vigsø were constructed during World War II by German forces as a coastal defense installation intended to protect strategic areas of northern Jutland. The site once included gun emplacements, observation posts, and support bunkers that formed part of the larger Atlantic Wall fortification system stretching along Europe’s western coastline.

After the war, the bunkers were abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the natural environment. Strong winds, moving sand dunes, and constant coastal erosion have altered the landscape significantly, leaving some bunkers inland, others half-buried, and several pushed into the North Sea, which gives the area its distinctive and haunting appearance.

Today, the bunkers are freely accessible and attract visitors interested in military history, photography, and coastal walks. The location offers a quiet, atmospheric experience rather than a curated museum, allowing visitors to explore the remnants at their own pace while experiencing the raw forces of nature that continue to reshape the site.

Story

After that, we drove a little ways down the road to the Vigsø bunkers. This was one of the highlights of the whole trip. There were a bunch of World War II bunkers that the Nazis built when they occupied Denmark in the 1940s. The coastline has eroded since then, and several of the bunkers are out in the water or on the open shore.

We had a ton of fun walking into and exploring some of the bunkers that were partially submerged. 

We also boosted each other up into the different entryways so we could climb around inside. 

It was so much fun. The water was splashing around inside the bunkers and it was very dark except for some blue light that filtered in through the hatch openings. We spent most of the day there. We even saw a few jellyfish.

Savannah made an art piece on the beach out of rocks and plants. The kids dug holes and played in the sand.
