The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is located in the heart of Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate and was inaugurated in 2005. Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, it consists of 2,711 concrete slabs of varying heights arranged in a grid pattern across a sloping field, creating an unsettling and contemplative experience as visitors walk through it. Beneath the memorial is an information center that provides historical context, personal stories, and detailed documentation of the Holocaust.
The abstract nature of the memorial is intentional, avoiding explicit symbols to allow individuals to interpret the space emotionally and personally. As visitors move deeper into the grid, the ground dips and the slabs rise, often creating feelings of isolation, confusion, and disorientation meant to echo the psychological impact of persecution and loss. This design choice has made the memorial both widely respected and the subject of ongoing public discussion.
Today, the memorial serves as both a place of mourning and an educational site, drawing millions of visitors each year. It stands as a central reminder of Germany’s commitment to remembering the past and confronting the consequences of hatred, antisemitism, and genocide, while also emphasizing the importance of tolerance and human rights in the present.

We walked through the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a vast field of concrete slabs that creates a disorienting, solemn experience as the ground rises and falls between the pillars.
We rested at the east end; I lay down for a moment and got scolded because only sitting is allowed there.
