Hype:
Grenen, translated “The Branch”, is the long sandbar spit at Skagens Odde, often described as Denmark’s northernmost point (though the true northernmost land lies nearby) where two seas collide — the Skagerrak and the Kattegat — in striking wave action. This natural feature has been growing over time as sand and gravel are pushed northeast by strong currents, making it a dynamic and ever-changing landscape. Walking to the tip of the spit is a highlight for visitors; many come to stand where the two seas meet and feel the raw power of nature at work.
The expansive beach and sandbar area is also a haven for wildlife. It’s one of the top birdwatching spots in Denmark, with migratory birds funneling through during seasonal movements, and you’ll often see seals sunning on the beach or porpoises offshore. The environment supports a range of plant species colonizing new land as it forms. Nearby attractions such as the Skagen Bunker Museum, remnants of World War II fortifications, and the Skagen Odde Nature Centre — designed by architect Jørn Utzon — add cultural and historical depth to the visit.
Visiting Grenen can be done on foot from Skagen town (about a 3–4 km trek) or via the Sandormen, a tractor-drawn wagon that transports visitors over the sandy terrain. The beach experience varies with the weather — it’s often windy and exposed to the elements, but offers dramatic light and views that have inspired artists for generations. Swimming isn’t recommended due to powerful currents, but walking, photography, wildlife watching, and picnics are popular. The site attracts many visitors year-round, with summer being especially busy.

Wednesday, July 23 – I was originally planning to work on Wednesday, but since I worked a long day on Tuesday and got caught up on what I needed, I ended up taking Wednesday off.
We drove up north to Skagen, the northern tip of Denmark. We parked by a lighthouse and walked around the outside.
Then we walked along the beach for about a mile up to the very tip-top.
It was awesome because where the two seas came together, the waves came in from both directions and met in the middle with a big splash.
We didn’t have our swimsuits on, so we didn’t go out very deep, but it was a lot of fun. There were a ton of people there.
On the walk back, we passed a couple bunkers and looked at them from the outside.
We had lunch on some picnic tables by the lighthouse. Kenneth cooked some hot dogs for us, and we had the classic Danish-style hot dogs with mustard sauce, some other sauce that we have no idea what it was, fried onions, and pickles on top.
They were really good. We ate 30 hot dogs between everybody.
We bought some magnets at the gift shop, then we put on our swimsuits and swam in the ocean. We really liked all the rocks that were tumbled smooth in the ocean. When they were wet, they were very colorful. Savannah made a whole rainbow with different colors of rocks. She also made a woven kelp mat.
The ocean was cold but tolerable.
